Nostalgia and the Wedding Dress

There’s something about a wedding, especially one where the atmosphere is just right, and all the elements work together, that make for the best kinds of nostalgia. The word ” nostalgia ” has a connection, etymologically speaking, to the nose. This is because the sense of smell is connected to memory in a way that no other sense can match. This means that weddings are a place for the maximum of stimulation, so that all the senses can become involved for the spectators. This helps them to really engage with the event, and help shape it with their enthusiasm, and also to carry it forward in their own memories.

It certainly helps, then, to plan for all of the elements of a wedding, especially in relation to their capacity for stimulating the senses, as well as engaging the mind, in order to make a memory. The ritual of the wedding is usually already set forth, so that everyone in attendance has an idea of the order of things. This helps to put them in a frame to take in the details. For the bride, used designer wedding dresses are one way of making their own nostalgia already present. Although their history is never visible, because for anyone else in attendance they look brand new, they do contain histories in their fabric, and this extends into the present moment to make for something nostalgic and entirely romantic.
