Building a Career as a Travel Nurse

Posted by Brian on Jan 25, 2011 in Career

As far as careers go, there are few that have the mythos of nursing. The romantic notions and heroic images that society has built around nurses makes it attractive to many people as a career path. Once they are immersed in the study and practice, however, they realize that it’s not all that glamorous or romantic. It is about healing and helping, but it’s also about bodies, blood, and death.

To regain some of the romance of the field, some nurses are investigating the opportunities provided by Travel nursing . This allows nurses to travel to different parts of the country to work in hospitals for short periods of time, usually between eight and thirteen weeks but sometimes for up to a year. They get to travel, meet new people, and get paid for doing a job they love.

In order to begin building this career, nurses need to find a reputable travel nurse placement agency. Most work the same way as temporary agencies, making connections between nurses and available positions and serving as the employer of record so that nurses can build seniority and earn benefits even as they change assignments over time. A good agency is going to provide nurses with a furnished place to live during their assignment as well as pay for their travel to and from the assignment. They will have good benefits and insurance and will help nurse with licensing and other professional considerations.

Establishing a good relationship with a travel nurse agency is really the most important step in starting a career in travel nursing. After that it’s just a matter of choosing from the available assignments and then going out and doing the work.

Carbon Filtering of Water

Posted by Brian on Jan 18, 2011 in Science

Have you ever wondered how the water you drink gets cleaned and purified? There are three main ways: chemical, biological, and physical barrier filtering. The first two use specific agents to alter the waters chemistry. In the third, water is passed through a barrier in order to remove particulates and harmful substances.

The most common barrier used in water filtering is carbon. Because of its natural design, carbon provides a large surface area in relationship to its mass. This means that a small amount of carbon translates to a huge surface area that attracts and filters out contaminants from water.

This is accomplished by activating the carbon with a positive charge. That charge will the attract the negatively charged elements that contaminate the water. As water is pushed through the carbon filter, sediment, chlorine and volatile organic compounds (or VOCs) are removed from the water. The slower the rate of water flow, the longer the water is exposed to the carbon and the more contaminants are removed. Water with high concentrations of salts, minerals, and dissolved inorganic compounds will need a different type of filter, as carbon is not effective in removing these specific contaminants.

In addition to being used in many water filters , carbon can be used in air purifiers.

What Copywriters Do

Posted by Brian on Jan 12, 2011 in Career

There is a lot of talk on the web about copywriting. The number of blogs and sites offering advice on the subject has exploded over the last few years. To the uninitiated it may seem like just another scheme to get rich quick, but the work that copywriters do serves a valuable purpose in the business world and, thanks to the explosion of media channels on the web, is in high demand.

Originally copywriters were employed by advertising and marketing agencies and tasked with writing the text for all forms of advertising. They were usually paired with a graphic artist who would create the images to go with the ad campaign. Over the years this grew to include writing radio and television copy as well as ads for newspapers, magazines, and billboards. Copywriters also became very important in the direct mail industry, writing everything from postcard offers to newsletters and extensive “how to” handbooks to be sent to customers and potential customers.

Once the web entered the picture, copywriters were asked to compose more than just ads. Entire websites and blogs are essentially expanded advertisements requiring the talents of an experienced copywriter to craft the text that will attract and engage readers and turn them into consumers. Today, copywriting jobs can be found in PR firms, at book publishers, in cable and broadcast networks, and with newspapers and magazines as well as with blogs, websites, and other online publishers.
