Popular Culture Reflected in Menus

Posted by Brian on May 24, 2011 in Lifestyle

People choose to collect weird things. Bugs. Fingernails from celebrities. Skulls. Every collection is a passion to the person doing the collecting, but many collections appeal to historians and other social scientists because they begin to create picture of a society, era, or interest. They can learn about popular culture by studying a collection of menus.

It is curious that someone would choose to collect menus and menu covers as anything other than a personal memento. Stealing a menu from the restaurant where a couple got engaged or where they wrote out the plans for a business makes sense. The idea that people would systematically seek out menus from restaurants purely for the sake of collecting them is much odder.

A menu collection can reveal how society went from valuing affordable family meals to theme experiences like the Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, and celebrity restaurants. It can show the relationship between depictions of certain cuisines on television and in magazines and the number of similar restaurant popping up in major cities. It can be used to draw conclusions about the pace of society by the rise and fall of multi-course meals versus fast casual restaurants.

Collections can be so much more than a reflection of an individual person’s interests and tastes. They can actually be a window into a society, class, or culture.

Travel Insurance for Everyone

Posted by Brian on May 18, 2011 in Travel

There are only two things you need to know about travel insurance. The first is that it is imperative that you purchase adequate insurance before embarking on any international trip. The second is that you will want to make sure you are getting the right insurance for your specific circumstances.

Unlike the medical insurance that you get through your employer, where one size fits all depending on how many dependents you have, TATA AIG travel insurance , like all visitor policies, is going to be customized to your circumstances. If you are a student you will get different insurance than if you are traveling for business. Short term travelers need different coverage than those traveling for months or years. Even the destination or destinations on your itinerary will affect the type of insurance you get. You don’t want a policy that only covers you in Asia if you plan to make side trips to Australia.

Don’t let the complexity of the insurance scare you off. Once you answer a few questions about the nature of your travel and whether you are going alone, with a spouse, or other family members, you will only have to narrow down coverage levels and costs. Whatever you do, don’t give up and think that you don’t really need insurance. The risks associated with travel of any kind are only magnified when you are heading to foreign countries that have different medical and legal systems . A single accident or virus and you will be grateful that you took the time to get insurance.

Dress Like a MLB Star

Posted by Brian on May 5, 2011 in Leisure

Every kids seems to know instinctively that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Even before they can spell the word mimic, they are begging their parents to let them dress like their favorite superhero or sports star.

This desire to emulate heroes and role models doesn’t disappear as people get older, it just morphs into something more acceptable. Individuals choose to pursue similar paths and model their behavior and character traits after those they admire rather than imitate their modes of dress. Still, there are enough grown men walking around in baseball jerseys to prove that the desire to dress like a star never truly goes away.

It’s much easier to get away with this type of dress on special occasions. Opening Day at the ballpark, a baseball-themed party, or a costume event are all good times to dress like a star player. Of course, some fans take it to extremes, dressing for every game, whether they attend in person or watch from home. Some will make the long trek to Spring Training camps or away games for an excuse to cheer on their team while wearing jerseys and caps. Some people have entire wardrobes outfitted with team regalia and are not afraid to wear it every chance they get.
