A Faraway Vacation Spot

Posted by Brian on Dec 2, 2011 in Real Estate, Uncategorized

Well all have our favorite vacation spot. Somewhere where we can just relax and be ourselves for a few days. People head to the ocean, they head to the hills, Some prefer the lake, others the top of a mountain. Me I prefer to be hidden away in my cabin miles away from people and close to nature.

My cabin is fairly rustic in nature, but for me it is ideal. I bought it years ago when I refinanced my home in the city. There are no utilities. A well supplies the water, pumped clean and pure from thirty feet underground. The pump is run by a generator. The electric system is hooked to to solar panels which store the power in a battery system. If there is a few cloudy days then I may run the generator to charge up the batteries. In colder weather there is a wood burning stove which keeps the cabin very warm – too warm some times! The biggest drain on the batteries would be a refrigerator. I say wood be as I invested in a propane fridge which works fine – though not as good as an electrical one.

I have a water tank set up on a nearby hill and so gravity along feeds the water into the cabin. When there is a frost I have had problems with frozen pipes – but fortunately not burst ones. The cabin is equipped with a septic tank. It works well though occasionally it has to be emptied.

I would like to say that I’m working towards being self sufficient and growing all my own food. Unfortunately I do not spend enough time there and most of my food comes with me courtesy of my local grocery store. Of course my stove runs on propane which works just as good as regular gas. Though its always a good idea to inventory control your propane tanks to prevent them running out at meal time!

The rest of the cabin is pretty rustic. None of the comforts of home. But I spend most of my time out of doors and so creature comforts are not so important. What is important is getting away and spending some time away from the rat race – hikes, cookouts and my hammock are all important parts of my time away!
