What Copywriters Do

Posted by Brian on Jan 12, 2011 in Career

There is a lot of talk on the web about copywriting. The number of blogs and sites offering advice on the subject has exploded over the last few years. To the uninitiated it may seem like just another scheme to get rich quick, but the work that copywriters do serves a valuable purpose in the business world and, thanks to the explosion of media channels on the web, is in high demand.

Originally copywriters were employed by advertising and marketing agencies and tasked with writing the text for all forms of advertising. They were usually paired with a graphic artist who would create the images to go with the ad campaign. Over the years this grew to include writing radio and television copy as well as ads for newspapers, magazines, and billboards. Copywriters also became very important in the direct mail industry, writing everything from postcard offers to newsletters and extensive “how to” handbooks to be sent to customers and potential customers.

Once the web entered the picture, copywriters were asked to compose more than just ads. Entire websites and blogs are essentially expanded advertisements requiring the talents of an experienced copywriter to craft the text that will attract and engage readers and turn them into consumers. Today, copywriting jobs can be found in PR firms, at book publishers, in cable and broadcast networks, and with newspapers and magazines as well as with blogs, websites, and other online publishers.
