Building a Career as a Travel Nurse

Posted by Brian on Jan 25, 2011 in Career

As far as careers go, there are few that have the mythos of nursing. The romantic notions and heroic images that society has built around nurses makes it attractive to many people as a career path. Once they are immersed in the study and practice, however, they realize that it’s not all that glamorous or romantic. It is about healing and helping, but it’s also about bodies, blood, and death.

To regain some of the romance of the field, some nurses are investigating the opportunities provided by Travel nursing . This allows nurses to travel to different parts of the country to work in hospitals for short periods of time, usually between eight and thirteen weeks but sometimes for up to a year. They get to travel, meet new people, and get paid for doing a job they love.

In order to begin building this career, nurses need to find a reputable travel nurse placement agency. Most work the same way as temporary agencies, making connections between nurses and available positions and serving as the employer of record so that nurses can build seniority and earn benefits even as they change assignments over time. A good agency is going to provide nurses with a furnished place to live during their assignment as well as pay for their travel to and from the assignment. They will have good benefits and insurance and will help nurse with licensing and other professional considerations.

Establishing a good relationship with a travel nurse agency is really the most important step in starting a career in travel nursing. After that it’s just a matter of choosing from the available assignments and then going out and doing the work.
